Root causes/weak link
Firstly have to positive to get something today when our first 45 should have seen us 3 down & out.
Now.. I'm not a Noble hater, far from it but he is being shown to be the weak link in midfield & it's costing us.
A defensive midfielder he is not, nor is he creative enough. Hard grafter and west ham lifer but with the return of Song he can't justify a start in my opinion.
Lost posession again today directly resulting in a goal. Rarely picks out a striker and now Payet takes set pieces penalties and hard work (as well as his current captaincy) is all that is keeping him afoat. Unfortuantely everything seems to grind to a halt OR go to the opposition when he receives the ball. Can't see a formation that would justify his inclusion.

We have different opinions on the player. Fair enough.

Whereas I, and many others, think for much of the second half of last season he was lucky to hold his place.

Alex, he was shit post Christmas, even Stevie Wonder could have told you that

I think a misfiring Song was still pretty much our best player last season. I think the criticism of him was completely overdone. Can't wait for him to be fit again.

Re: Root causes/weak link
Song could go on to be one of our greatest players, but last season he was a real mixed bag. Ridiculously good in the first half of the season and but after that he seemed to have forgotten how to pass the ball.

For that reason I don't see why he'd walk into the team right now. Like Carroll he's a good player who needs to earn his place again.

I don't think Obiang and Noble were that good at Man City.

We couldn't get out of our own half for most of the match.

Well I think Noble played it against Norwich and Sunderland.

But not against Norwich and Sunderland.

He hasn't. Obiang has played it 6 times.

Croe

I agree, Noble and Obiang were terrific at man city. Noble seems to have become the scapegoat for some reason.

exile i agree mate, i think on balance it would be kouyate dropping to the bench at the moment.

Re: Root causes/weak link
If you remember the Arsenal game, we had Oxford in the role in front of the back four and it worked a treat. I have no idea why Bilic has largely dispensed with that role - maybe to be more attack-minded. I think he should definitely bring it back, using Obiang, with Oxford deputising. This would give us a much better shape and provide much-needed security and liberty to Noble and Kouyate. Obviously one of these two will probably lose their place to Song when he's back. So we end up with a 4-1-4-1 or 4-1-2-3 formation.

Re: Root causes/weak link
The fact that four different players have been responsible for the regular slack passes out of defence, is probably the clue, rather than a single poor individual performance

The opposition seem to have sensed that if they put the pressure on the full back areas, we don't have a simple ball to play us out of the corner and all too often contrive to play a poor pass in field which gets intercepted easily by their centre forward

It's almost as if there's an instruction not to play the ball out down the wings!

I have no problem with a long accurate pass forward to put us on the attack, when we're getting pressed

Before anyone starts shouting "That's not the West Ham way" I would remind them that Bobby Moore was exceptional at playing that kind of ball

Song is talented at picking out that type of pass too, so I look forward to seeing him back in the team

Re: Root causes/weak link
Why is it Noble's place most under threat from Song? At the moment it would be Kouyate dropping out on form.

Re: Root causes/weak link
If the manager has anything about him, and I believe he does, then he'll pick the best team from the squad available to him having seen how all the players operate.

If that means Noble should be bumped for Song when fit, captain or not, the he should I'll be disappointed if he plays Noble for the sake of it, or drops someone else in another position to accommodate him. We had enough of that under Allardyce.

But it works both ways and if Noble is pulling up trees and and Song is ring rusty for the next three months then Noble should get the nod.

Or they should just make me the manager.

"Obiang/Noble might be better away from home then "

It would be like it was at Man City but our other TWO away victories we had 3 central midfielders and for me that's the best formation.

And Antonio may provide some more defensive cover out wide or play Tomkins instead of Jenks

and yes Leicester are unlikely to be relegated but it was a reserve side.

The last there performances have been poor against sides likely to be relegated.

I have no idea why the manager decided it was a good idea to play that side, it was a mistake and these 3 games have had the Kouyate/Noble partnership that doesn't work.
